
DEPUTY CHIEF TIM GUTHRIE BIO:
On November 1, 2009 Tim Guthrie was appointed Salem’s Deputy Chief of Police with the rank of Captain.
Captain Guthrie began his career with the Salem Police Department in October 1981 as an Officer assigned to the Patrol Division. After completing field service as a Patrol and Traffic Officer, he was transferred to the Detective Division where he rose to the rank of Sergeant
of the Division.
He later served as the Services Division Sergeant and Lieutenant as he handled the central supply and support component of the Department. Captain Guthrie also has served as the Director of Salem’s highly successful Camp DARE that just completed its 19th season.
Captain Guthrie is a graduate of the 220th session of the FBI National Academy and the 23rd session of the Administrative Officer Management Program (AOMP). He has completed numerous police training schools and seminars in police management and investigative practices.
A Roanoke City native, Guthrie graduated from William Fleming High School and completed requirements for his AAS Degree in Administration of Justice from Virginia Western Community College. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Bluefield College and is currently pursuing
post-graduate studies at Hollins University.
Spending time at the beach and hunting are among his favorite pastimes.
