As part of our youth relations program, the department sponsors Explorer Post No. 606 of the Boy Scouts of America.   The eleven members are given classroom exposure to the operation of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and after extensive training they are permitted to observe police work in a ride-along program.  Under the direction of Senior Officers, members of the Post assisted with crowd control during the annual Christmas Parade and the Salem Fair.  Several Explorers participated in a citywide neighborhood watch meeting with the Standards/Crime Prevention Officer.  The Explorers dressed as McGruff, the Crime Dog, and visited local schools and several daycare centers.  In the Spring of 1999 Explorer Post 606 received a quality unit award from the Boy Scouts of America for providing an outstanding program for youth.

On May 27, 1999, An advisor of the Post was presented one of Scouting’s most coveted awards for adults, the District Award of Merit.  The honor reflected his commitment to the principles of scouting and his involvement with Explorer Post 606 in Salem.
