The Salem Police
Department is a modern, well trained and well equipped organization
dedicated to the delivery of the highest possible quality protective
service to Salem's citizens and guests.
The Salem Police Department is one of
the original founding member agencies of the Cardinal Criminal
Justice Academy. The Academy functions to provide state
mandated entry level and in-service training to 39 law enforcement
agencies throughout the western region of Virginia. Through
cooperative effort with other member agencies, the Salem Police
Department contribute skills and instructional abilities of twenty
seven officers who hold state certification as general or
specialized instructors. In its sixteenth year of operation,
the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy has an officer/student body of
over 1200. More than 67,000 hours of police training were
provided to students covering 56 course titles.
Since September 1997 the Department has held the prestigious status
of accreditation under the auspices of the Virginia Law Enforcement
Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC). This achievement
represents a milestone in the history of the Salem Police Department
as practically every employee contributed in some manner to the
success that is represented in achieving agency accreditation.
